The Word

The gospel of John in the first chapter and the first verse is one of many of my favorite verses in the Bible. It talks about the Word of God. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Since the Word was here from the beginning, let us go back to Genesis to the first chapter starting with verse one, and it says this: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." How did God do this? With His words. Nine times in Genesis chapter one God speaks His word and it creates that which He spoke. It was only after God said it, that He saw what He said. So God?s words were and still are creative words. Just look at what His words created !

Hebrews 11:3 says "Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear." The world was not made out of things you can see. You cannot see spoken words, nor can you see faith with the physical eye. The words that God spoke out of His mouth framed the universe.

God said. " Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters and let it divide the waters from the waters...". (Genesis 1:6) and it came to pass. God?s spoke words divided the waters from the land and it is still divided from the land today. Then God said, "Let there be light" It was the creative words that flowed out of God?s mouth that turned the universe into light and caused everything created to come into being. I like what Jesus said to Satan when He was being tempted in the wilderness, "It is written". What is written? God?s word is what Jesus was saying. "That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God." (Luke 4:4)

The Word of God is very important when it says that we are to live by its every Word. I have learned in my own life that you cannot live by those things that you know nothing about. We can live by God?s Word if we know His word. God?s Word is a serious matter, not to be taken lightly. We serve a Holy God.

Mark 13:31 says, "Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away." God?s Word will be here forever. Even Mary made a bold statement in Luke 1:38, "Be it unto me according to Your Word". Whose word was Mary talking about? God?s Word.

God?s Word is forever settled in heaven. "Forever, O' Lord thy Word is settled in Heaven."(Psalms 119:89) Forever is a long time. It is time without end. The Word of God is the gospel. It is the good news. It is the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the power of God unto salvation. Jesus says in John 8:47 "He that is of God heareth God's words." The Word of God is of the utmost importance. If we did not have God?s word, we would have nothing. Without it, what exists now today would not exist. We would have no universe as we see it today. Without the Word, there would be no light only total darkness. The earth would be without its form. We would have no firmament to divide the waters from the waters. There would be no animals ; not even man. There would be no need of a savior; no salvation; no faith. Absolutely nothing. But thank God that is not the case. We have God?s very own word on that.

I think that sometimes we take all this for granted. I thank God for all of those words that He said from Genesis clear through to Revelation. I am thankful for a savior that came and gave His very own life so that I would have life eternal, or eternal life, life without end. Let us not neglect such a great salvation and all that God has given us.

Without the Word of God, faith would be obsolete. It was faith-filled words coming out of God?s very own mouth that created everything we see. Without faith we wouldn?t believe in a savior. We have not seen Jesus with our physical eyes, and yet we believe that He is the Son of God, born of a virgin into this world to save it from sin.

Jesus said to doubting Thomas in John 20:29 "Thomas, because thou hast seen me thou hast believed. Blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed."

When I read the Word of God, I believe everything it says. I have faith in the Word. How did I get this faith to believe in God?s Word? I got it the way God said that I would. In Romans 10:17 it says, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God." Yes, that?s exactly how I got it. Just like God said I would. By hearing God?s word spoken over and over and over again. This produces faith in God. If we can develop the right faith, then we can also develop the wrong faith. If we raise a child and continue to speak to him that he is worthless and that he will never amount to anything, when he grows up he will believe this. He will have no faith in himself. The definition of faith in the Hebrew and the Greek is a "conviction of religious truth, truthfulness of God, reliance upon Christ for salvation; assurance, belief, to believe, be certain, steadfast, firm, established, a fixed position and a rested assurance." I pray that God will give others this same rested assurance also. Have faith in God and know that what God says is true. John 4:24 says "God is a spirit, and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth."
