What's That Sound?

By Rev. David M. Ford

Shhh. That sound. Do you hear it brother? Do you hear it sister? That ringing sound? That sound of metal striking metal, repeated over and over? Do you hear it? That's the sound of the Roman soldier's hammer as it pounds the nails through Jesus' flesh as they crucify Him.

Wait. There's a new sound, a moaning noise. Do you hear it? That sound of pain and agony? That's the sound of Jesus' suffering as he hangs nailed to the cross, spikes through his hands and feet, his crown of thorns buried deep into the flesh of his forehead.

That rumbling noise, what's that? Is it thunder? No brother, no sister, it's more than that! That's the sound of the very sky splitting open, of the very earth shaking, of millions of rocks splitting open, as Jesus dies on the cross for you.

And singing, can you hear the singing? The beautiful sounds of millions of voices raised in praise and worship, singing "Hallelujah! Praises to the Lamb of God!" Can you hear it? That's no ordinary choir you're listening to. That's the sound of countless angels as they lift their beautiful voices up to God in Heaven, praising Him for His Perfect Sacrifice of His Son for our sins, as He ascends into Heaven to join His Father on His Heavenly Throne.

Shhh. Hold on. There's a new sound. Listen closely, now. Listen. There! That knocking sound. Can you hear it? A soft, gentle knocking sound. I know you can hear it. What's that sound? I won't tell you what that sound is. I don't have to tell you. I'll let Jesus tell you what that sound is.

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him,"
(Revelation 3:20a)

That's right, brother. That's right, sister. That's gentle knocking sound is Jesus knocking on the door of your heart.

Won't you open your heart to Him? Won't you let Him know that you know that He died for YOU? You can, you know. You can open your heart to Jesus right now, right this minute, right this very second!

But how, you ask? How can I, a poor sinner, let Jesus into my heart? I'll tell you. You just say this prayer. Won't you say it now?

Dear God, as best I know how, with a realization of my sins before a Holy God, I open the door of my heart to You. I here and now commit my all to Jesus Christ, by faith taking Him as my Lord and Saviour. I thank Him for His great love for me in dying on the Cross to put away my sins. I thank Him for His wondrous resurrection and His life for me now in Heaven. Now I look to Him to help to confess Him before men. Amen.

What's that sound? That heavenly sound of joyous celebration? Angels are singing, brother! Angels are singing, sister! Heaven itself is celebrating Your Salvation!
